The Key To Contentment

half empty or half full.......

A shade of man’s imperfection is his inclination to dwell on things that he does not possess. Our imperfect nature propels us to look at the other side of the fence and be bowled over by the material things that our neighbors and other people in general have. As a consequence, we cultivate the attitude of envy, which develops into discontentment in due course.

There is nothing wrong with acquiring material possessions, since we need them anyway. It becomes a distemper though, when our craving for such is already bordering on excessiveness and ridiculousness. What further reinforces this is our penchant for “keeping up with the Joneses”, or acquiring things just to be recognized and to be at par with others. There is nothing wrong in aspiring for the finer things in life, but only if you can afford them, and if you need them.

The invention of new gadgets and the sprouting of new fashion brands are driving us crazy. The opening of malls left and right had our feet aching to visit them. Media advertisements and huge billboards further reinforce our desire for material things. Man has truly evolved, not just biologically, but materially as well. Gone are the protruding foreheads, as well as sticks and stones.

The key to contentment in life is to appreciate things in our possession. I thank God for a decent roof over my head, a stable car that brings me to work, the square meals I eat, and all other things that make my life a little bit comfortable. Gone are the days when I would race with time to have this and have that. True wealth, is contentment. Happiness can’t be bought.

Yes, I don’t have you. You don’t have me either.
