I
was drawn to watching the first few episodes of this prime time teleserye of a “family”
network, for the reason that I was intrigued by its mind-twisting title.
Consequently,
I learned that the story revolves around something sweet and irresistible –
chocolate. The principal character is an heiress of her father’s chocolate
manufacturing company, and her supposed to be love interest is a chocolatier – a person who makes confectionery out of chocolate.
The
chocolatier comes from a middle class family involved in a small chocolate
business, and was hired by the heiress to be their company’s yes, chocolatier.
Having
chocolate as the element that glues all the goings on in the story is quite
creative, in the sense that it is the first of its kind in the history of
Filipino teleserye sagas. The question, however, is its applicability to our
socio-cultural norms, since chocolate making is more identified with western countries.
Though
our country produces and exports cacao, the Philippines is yet to be mentioned
in the same breath as Belgium, Switzerland, and the US are mentioned for example.
The
story has all the condiments of a Filipino teleserye – love, hate, deception, and
revenge, to which many Filipino viewers can easily relate to. But with the plot
or theme that runs around chocolate making, I don’t think so.
Hence,
an epic fail (and corny as well).
