For the past couple of years, it has
been a normal recourse for cabinet officials to resign or quit their post if
they are not able to deliver the goods to their countrymen. As of late, Energy
Secretary Carlos Jericho Petilla made public his intention of leaving his post,
for his failure to bring electricity to Yolanda-hit provinces on the eve of
Christmas day.
It should be recalled that last December
19, Petilla mentioned that he will resign should he not be able to meet his
target of restoring electricity in the affected provinces on the 24th
of December.
Obviously, the company rule of submitting
one’s letter of resignation a month prior is not applicable to cabinet
officials. They can just vacate their office anytime upon the prodding of their whims and caprices.
The secretary’s desire to resign was
uncalled for. Sure, he did not meet the target that he himself crafted. But I
don’t think that the entire nation will create a furor out of it, since every
Filipino is fully aware of the massiveness of the damage that Yolanda brought to the Visayas.
I would rather face the music than
resign. Resigning is tantamount to saying that you cannot do the job, and that
you are inept in bringing to the fore the expected deliverables. One should not
resign at a time of crisis, for you are like a captain unceremoniously abandoning
a troubled ship.
For sure, you will receive criticisms
for not fulfilling your promise. But I don’t think that Filipinos will make a
big deal out of it since all of us are aware that fixing the affected provinces
cannot happen overnight. People will not go to EDSA and call for your
resignation.
Despite our efforts, there are things
that are simply beyond our control.
Don’t picture yourself as a martyr Mr.
Secretary, instead, show some balls please.
