THE VOICE OF THE PHILIPPINES: Voice Over Looks?

I am quite addicted to watching The Voice of the Philippines. Like a moth to a flame, what draws me to it is my curiosity as to how the contestants will impress the judges with their singing ability and song of choice, and how the judges will react to them. What kind of song will each contestant sing? Who among the judges will press the button? I am not that interested though in finding out which judge a contestant will pick, since all the four judges are good in their own right anyway. It does not matter to me anymore which team a contestant would want to become a part of. The important thing I guess is that the contestant made it to the list, period.

Acts of Kindness

I am very certain that each one of us has already received acts of kindness from others at some points in our lives. But we all know that it is impossible to remember each and every one of them. Luckily, there are some that are jammed wonderfully in our minds and hearts. Such acts make us smile whenever we remember them, and smile even more when we remember their respective doers. In my case, it is quite uncommon that someone will walk an extra mile for me. It is quite rare for people to literally climb the proverbial ivory tower and reach out to me. I know that people find me unapproachable. So why come anywhere near me, much less lend a hand?

Throwback Thursday.....

Every Thursday, expect Facebook to be flooded with pictures of old. This online phenomenon is appropriately called “Throwback Thursday” (as if you don’t know!). When this day of the week arrives, I know that many of us are excited to log on to Facebook to check for such pictures. I don’t know the story behind this online ritual every Thursday. But if there is one thing that I know of, then that is the idea that we Filipinos love it to the hilt! This stems from the fact that we Filipinos are very sentimental beings (and are extremely fond of taking pictures if I may add).

Ms. Abbygale Monderin

Not so long ago, I encouraged a pretty and statuesque HRM student to join our school’s Lakan at Lakambini ng Buwan ng Wika. After our class, I called her and asked her to join.  In a very straightforward yet respectful manner, she told me that her mother would prefer a bigger pageant for her to compete in. So it was a NO! Honestly, I was quite stunned with her reply. But looking back, it did not affect me at all since she must have disarmed me with her charming demeanor and beautiful smile. So her Mom was picky and will not just settle for any beauty title for her daughter, huh? Fast forward to year 2012, I invited her again to the same contest and she did not think twice in answering in the affirmative. She participated in the event not as a contestant though, but as a judge, with a major beauty title already up her sleeves…….

Garbage Comedy

This comedian has become notorious for picking on other people’s physical flaws to make his audience laugh as if there is no tomorrow. Obviously, this is his brand of comedy which he nurtured during his days at comedy bars, which he carried to his TV shows and concerts. He had a sell-out concert just recently and as usual, his brand of comedy was all over the place. It was indeed successful, but not without a string of criticisms.

SALTED CREAM

I am not fond of milk, and I am not fond of tea as well. So put them together, and it will spell disaster as far as my taste buds are concerned. But out of curiosity since everybody seems to be all agog over milk tea, I got a bottled one from a convenience store many moons ago. As expected, it did not rhyme with my taste. Since then, I did not dare drink milk tea, no matter how tempting it is to get one, what with the different milk tea outlets that have mushroomed left and right.

GIVING THE CREDIT WHERE CREDIT IS DUE : WCC'S 41st Commencement Exercises

It has been more than two weeks already since we had our commencement exercises, and the recent days made me realize that I have not yet acknowledged those people who helped me stage such yearly school activity.  The many tasks that have to be accomplished immediately after graduation, prevented me perhaps from thanking people for all their efforts which contributed to the success of our 41st Commencement Exercises. But as the saying goes, better late than never. So through this humble blog, allow me thank them sincerely, in no particular order.

Should Attendance Be Graded? (Classroom Chronicles Part III)

Should attendance be graded?

There are two schools of thought as regards the question. There are people who maintain that attendance should be graded, while those at the other side of the fence of opinion believe that it shouldn’t be. In one of my subjects in the graduate program before, I learned from my professor that attendance should not be graded, primarily because it is not indicative of a student’s cognitive ability. I cannot agree with her more! Hence, my personal take on this matter rhymes absolutely with what my professor said – attendance should not be graded.

The Dreaded Q & A.....

The Q and A portion in any beauty pageant is usually the most awaited. Fanatics are curious about two things: what questions will be thrown and how the contestants will respond to them. We have witnessed many a beauty contest wherein the lady with the most intellectual answer bringing home the title (not in the case though in last year's Miss Universe). And we have also witnessed many a contestant wilting under the stage lights, and not able to answer a judge’s question properly. My question is, what matters the most and what is above over the other in any beauty pageant, beauty or brains?

Parental Duties and Matters of the Heart.....

The recent falling out between a pretty and sosyal actress and her parents, over the parents’ disapproval of the actress’ current politico-beau has led me to this question: up to when should parents involve themselves in the lives of their children? I initially wanted to use the word meddle, but eventually realized that it is too straightforward a term to be used, and thus, had to do a bit of sugar-coating here. So after some while in deep thought and thesaurus browsing, I was able to stumble upon a word with the kindest meaning – involve (but the two mean the same thing don’t they?).

On Kristel Tejada's Death: Is UP Manila Liable?

It has been a week since a Behavioral Science student of UP Manila took her own life allegedly because of tuition fee woes. Perhaps, many of you are wondering why I have not said a thing about the tragic death of Kristel Tejada (will my opinion matter?). I have been contemplating on writing something about it, but unfortunately, cannot find the right motivation to string all my thoughts into sentences. Blame it on other news that hogged the headlines, such as this perpetual spat between an actress-host and her estranged basketball player-husband, and the tirades made by the parents of a Kapuso actress towards their daughter’s politico-boyfriend (will I write something about them too?)
