/drift/
noun
a continuous movement from one place or another
This is just one
of the several definitions of the term “drift.” And I zeroed in on this one, for it
perfectly sets the tone of this current article I am writing.....
Knowingly or unknowingly,
we all have experienced drifting away from something, or from someone. And for
as long we are alive, we will continue to experience such.
New people that
we stumble upon, new things that we embrace, and new events in our lives, pave
the way for us to drift from many things – things that have become routinary, events
that have become cyclic, and people that
have become as cold as the Siberian wind.
In the plane of
human relationships, you will suddenly realize that communication is no longer
present – no more calls, no more texts, and no more private messages. No more
hellos in other words. Even special
occasions which are perfect prospects to show that we still care and remember,
are not spared from this human phenomenon we call “drifting.”
Occasions simply
pass by, without any exchange of greetings.
Like the sun and
its fading rays during sunset, we continue to drift as time passes by.
Memories become hazy and vague, and add to that names of people that have
become mere letters on your phone and social media directory.
But you are not
inclined to deleting them, for you are still courteous enough of not
doing so. An amount of civility still manifests in you.
To drift is to
move – literally and figuratively. Hopefully, drifting will lead us to people
who are more deserving of our warmth and time.
We drift when
things and people are not they way used to anymore.
We drift when sincere efforts made by us become unrequited.
And so with the
passage of time, we continue to drift…..
