In anything that
we do and pursue, we relentlessly remind ourselves that we should never give
up. Giving up is only for the weak hearted, and giving up is tantamount to
wasted opportunities and a bunch of might-have-beens. Man has only one life to
live, and he cannot reverse the passing of time. Therefore, we should seek the
things that our hearts desire, and yes, never give up. If not now, then when?
There are a lot of things that we want for ourselves, both tangible and
intangible. It could be a nice car, or that one person whom you want to spend
the rest of your life with. It could be something simple, like a charming
bookmark, or something splendid, like a big modern house. We are often told not
to give up, most especially on our pursuit of people, the finer things in life,
and our own happiness. But has somebody dared to tell you to do the opposite,
which is to give up?
There are times
wherein no matter how much and how hard we try, we simply do not get whatever
it is that we are aspiring to have. There are things that are meant to be,
period. If the two of you are meant for each other, then no amount of monsoon
rains will ever keep you apart. Destiny you might say. Reality will tell us,
that there are things that will remain unreachable. So you want the latest
Maserati? Travel to the moon? A perfect antidote to this, is to be simply contented
with what we have. We should not dwell on those things that we don’t have,
otherwise, envy and misery will just spoil the rest of our existence.
Contentment is the key. And this translates to learning to love, cherish, and
appreciate what we have – both things and people. If each and every one of us
could just follow this formula, then greed, jealousy, and envy will have no
place on earth. So Lady Diana married a
prince. But was she happy?
No harm done,
though, in dreaming of having this, and having that. Dreaming, after all, is an
existential freebie. Somewhere in a far corner in our mind lies our unreachable
stars – the Cullens, your own Eiffel Tower, the crown jewels of England, Paulina
Porizkova, and so on. This is the reason why fantasy is still very much alive in every available dictionary. It
is in the state of dreaming where our unreachable stars become reachable. But
once we wake up, reality will start to sneak into the crevices of our
consciousness, and start to realize it was only a dream. But a blissful one,
take note. So you have rubbed elbows with Brad Pitt?
There are things
that are not simply meant for us. But at least, we have tried to get close to
them. Some might have achieved the things they really wanted, but unfortunately,
they all slipped from their hands after a while. We have become so close to love, but
it never really ripened like a fruit. Here I go again: not meant to be. So you
have already saved enough money to buy a new watch but had to use the money for
something more important? Then that watch was not for you.
The best and
inevitable thing to do after we have done all we could to achieve something but
was unsuccessful in getting it, is to simply give up and move on. Try out new
other things. Pursue other individuals. Do not get stuck in something you know very
well that will never be yours. Our consolation prize though, is that at least
we have tried and have attempted a million times. We cannot afford to be
waiting for the rest of our lives for something, or for someone. For something,
or someone, could be waiting for us too.
So raise your
hands as a gesture of giving up. Give up! But no, I will never ever give up on
you. I swear to God this will never happen. You were never mine in the first
place.
