        Teachers are usually perceived as very formal, strict, and imperturbable whether inside or outside of the classroom. They are the personification of intelligence and grace and somehow, we place them on a pedestal because of such qualities. We establish a high regard for them. After all, they are our second parents. In fact, we even spend more time with them than with our own family since we spend the whole day in school. I bet you have never thought of this!

        Our teachers may present themselves to us as stiff and unexcitable. Boring, in other words. But we should not forget that they are also just as human as us. When they are in the mood they smile at us, even though your answer in the recitation is very farfetched.  They also laugh at jokes, no matter how corny they are. Some even have an irresistible sense of humor which gives students that much needed boost when the class becomes boring and dragging. But what if they are not in the mood? Then I guess you know the answer.

        It is only once in a blue moon when our dear teachers  and school staff let their hair down literally and figuratively, and show to us another side of them much to our amazement. During school activities, we see them in their unguarded moments. They are not that serious after all! In fact, some even have a funny side. Tao rin pala sila.

        Let this post be a tribute to all our teachers and school staff. Have you realized that they spend more time with us than their own family since they are also in school the whole day teaching  and assisting us? We are after all, one big happy family!

H A P P I N E S S

         Happiness is a very subjective concept, for a person’s brand of happiness may be different from those of other people. What makes you happy is entirely your own making, for you are the only one who can discern what will make you happy, and unhappy. People find joy in different things, from the simple to the complex. However, there is no perfect formula in achieving happiness. Life can be full of surprises, with its unexpected twists and turns.

         Material things can make us happy. This kind of happiness revolves around things that are tangible, and those that delight the senses. A new cell phone makes you excited to explore its features. A new dress or shirt makes you want to party all night. A new car makes you want to invite your friends and go to a favorite destination. A new bracelet makes you want to put your one hand in the air so that everybody will be awed by it. But if such things will be taken away from you, does this mean that your happiness is also taken away from you?

        People also derive happiness from others. Everything is bright and rosy for a person who is in love. Your first dinner date gave you a sleepless night, right? Did you not levitate the first time your significant other said I love you to you? Did you not blush the first time you held each other’s hands? When you parted ways, were you not a total wreck?

        Most of the time, we depend on objects and persons for our happiness. Why not be contented with the things that we have? Contentment translates to enjoying and appreciating things that we have. Focusing on those that we do not have will just make our life miserable. We cannot have all things in this world to begin with. So you have just broken up with your girlfriend or boyfriend? Then try to move on and gather the pieces to make yourself whole again. I know this is easier said than done but this is the only antidote to mend your wounded heart. Our happiness should come from our own self, and not from others. It is true though, that people make us happy. But they can do only up to a certain extent. At the end of the day, you will realize that there is no one else to turn to but yourself. 

        I have been wanting a Siberian Husky puppy for a long time now. But I have to practice what I have just preached: happiness and contentment. Alright, so I guess I have to be contented with my polar bear cub named "HAPPY".

        Beautiful is one of the most used words in the English language. We use it to describe a person, an object, a place, or just about anything that enthralls us. The concept of beauty has intrigued many a man including some great philosophers from before. It has mesmerized us, to the extent that we associate it with the good and true. Hence, it completes the triumvirate of the true, the good, and the beautiful.

        What makes a person beautiful? When I ask my students this question, the usual answers thrown at me are the following: nice, kind, with pleasing personality, and all other answers with sugar coatings. Very safe answers I must say! But such responses do not jibe with the query. Did I ask them about a person’s attitude?

Question:   Maganda ba GF mo?            

Answer:     Ay napakabait niya!

Question:   Guwapo ba BF niya?          

Answer:     Ay sobrang galang!

Can we not answer with either a yes or no?

        Physical appearance is the first thing that we notice when we cross paths with any individual. How can we say that that person is the nicest when we do not know that person yet? Hence, any discussion about beauty should start from an individual’s physical facade before we make any pronouncement about his or her so called “inner beauty”. We cannot deny the fact though, that having a first-rate character adds up to one’s beauty or handsomeness. It is an enhancement that cannot be provided by any cosmetic procedure.

  Beauty is subjective, and this I inculcate into the minds of my students. Each person has his or her own criteria of judging what is beautiful and otherwise. What about intelligence? Intelligence has its own ambit or sphere, and should not interweave with beauty. These two have their own domains if I may emphasize. But if we can have both, why not!

         But beauty has to be appreciated purely on its own. Forget about other things and just focus on beauty itself. When I am entranced by a beautiful painting, it really doesn’t matter to me whether it is oil or watercolor, expensive or affordable, etc. If I find it beautiful, then it is beautiful. Period. When I am charmed by a cute dog, it is not an issue with me whether it’s purebred or a mutt. If something is beautiful, then it simply is. End of discussion. If I find a person beautiful or handsome, then that’s it. No ifs and buts.

        Beauty fades as Father Time chases us. But the beauty of one’s character does not. In fact, it glows as time passes by. God will judge not our physical appearance, but our character. Beauty or character? Take your pick.

        Do not ask me if you are beautiful or handsome. Ask your mom and her answer will surely delight you. Or go get yourself a mirror and let it crack before you.

      Writing about my impostor on Facebook does not deserve a space in this precious blog, for it demeans the decency of this blog and its followers. But to set the record straight, I do not have any Facebook account, period. Reports have reached me that the contents of “my” profile are somewhere between hilarious to ridiculous. Tell me, is there a person on earth who will create a Facebook account then degrade himself or herself in that account? I think this is more than stupidity. I still know my left foot from my right. And you my dear stalker, do you?

  

      I have been tight-lipped for the longest time since I do not want to dignify this issue. I have better things to think of and do. To my impostor, we have already made peace with each other before. Remember? 

Not Meant To Be........ by JTF Solivar

         Not meant to be. This may either sound thwarting or comforting depending on which side of the coin you are tossed from. But the former is the usual sentiment of people when confronted by it.  It simply means that there are things that are not bound to happen, or things that are not meant for us. I liken this to a bitter pill that is hard to swallow. But reality bites, that there are things that are yes, not meant to be.

         Sometimes, if not most of the time, the things that we want for ourselves are very unattainable no matter how hard we try. For some reason, we simply could not get hold of them. It can be frustrating I know. But have you thought of the idea that perhaps, those things are not meant for us? Have you tried reaching for a fruit on a tree but simply could not get it no matter how high you have gone up?

        I believe that if something is meant for you, then you don’t have to struggle much in order to achieve it. I am not saying though that it will be served to you on a silver platter. Or that it will just fall on your lap. We still have to put forth some effort in order to achieve what we want. No pain, no gain. But my point is, if something is meant for us, then fate will make sure that it will sprint to our direction, resulting to a beautiful collision of some sort. Things happening in accordance to some divine master plan? 

         But why is it the case that the things that we want, are not the things meant for us? This is truly a paradox or an absurdity. If only there is an exact congruence between what we want, and that actual object, or person for that matter, then I am sure that this world will be full of glee and positivity. Sadly, there is none. The things that we want are sometimes those that are very hard to pin down. Very elusive, that is. But we do not mind chasing them and going crazy running after them. Have you tried catching a pretty butterfly but could not scoop it with your big net?

        Man aspired for the moon and everybody thought this is unachievable until 1969. Filipinos lost hope in achieving democracy until 1986. But if something is not bound to happen, then it simply won’t. No harm in trying though.  Who knows? We do not hold the future anyway. As they say, it is better to have tried than never to have tried at all. But sadly, after giving it your best shot, you sometimes end up with nothing. In pursuit of  something or someone, you sometimes end up staring at a blank wall. In short, not meant for you. You feel crushed, and feel that the world has caved in on you. But such is life. Have you tried becoming a member of a varsity team but did not make the cut no matter how good an athlete you are?

         Life can be full of surprises. One’s journey can have unexpected turns and detours. Have you tried buying a pair of shoes that is better than what you initially wanted for yourself? Have you stumbled upon a nice shirt, way nicer than what you really wanted to buy? Sometimes, beautiful things come unexpectedly. If a door closes, then a window might just open for you. Do not look far ahead, for you could be missing those that are near you, and those within your reach. A star will forever be unreachable.

         If things do not happen the way you plan them, or if things do not come your way, then they are not meant for you. Period.  This entire post could be merely lip service for I know that things are easier said than done.  Saying things and doing things are entirely two different things. But consider this: God knows in his infinite wisdom what is best for you. Maybe God has something better in store for us. It is just a matter of time. San Mig Light anyone?

     The counterpart of the Filipino word “ano” in English is “what”. When asking about a thing we utter either of them depending on which side of the globe you are coming from. But the word “ano” actually has another use. We use this as a substitute for a word or name of an object that we could not remember. Consider the following uses of "ano":

Sir patingin po ng ano ko... (ay doon sa CR go!)

- a student wants to see her schedule

 

Sir patingin po ng ano niya... (ay doon kayo sa CR go!)

- a student wants to see her friend's schedule

Sir magpapa-ano po ako... (tuli?)

 - a student wants to enroll

Sir nakalimutan ko po yung ano ko... (detachable ito?)

- a student forgot to bring his clearance

Sir nagpa-ano na po ako kay Ma'am Precie kanina... (tuli uli?)

- a student was assisted by Ma'am Precie

Sir nawawala yung ano ko... (lumakad mag-isa?)                                                           - a student's clearance is missing

Sir naiwan ko ba dito yung ano ko... (nalaglag? gumulong?)

- a student misplaced her registration from

Sir ngayon lang kami kasi nag ano po kami... (galeng galeng!)

- students were late for enrollment 

 Sir yung ano ko... (hay punyeta!)

- a student inquiring about his schedule

      Certainly, "ano" is the most convenient word to say in case the word that we want to spit out escapes our memory bank for a while. But hopefully, we can erase this "habit", and be more straightforward when we converse with one another as this is slowly becoming a  not-so-nice sub-culture of ours. Nag-ano ka na? =)

 

MRS. WALLY BAYOLA by JTF Solivar

                                                                

        Riza Ruen Bayola. The last name rings a bell, right? Unless you are from ancient Mesopotamia then you will not be familiar with it. If you watch TV and glued most especially to the Kapuso channel, then I am sure you that you will ask: how is Riza related to Wally Bayola? Wally is a famous comedian in his own right, and is a regular of Eat Bulaga and other shows. As if you don’t know! The first time that she became my student, I already knew that Wally is her husband since word got around concerning it. 

 

       

        Whether inside or outside the classroom, I find Riza unassuming and calm. No aura of my-husband-is-famous. Very cordial and low-key.  Very simple in her ways and manners.  Down to earth to put it simply. Walang ere. And is always ready to give you a warm smile.

    

        Riza must know the value of education very well, since she decided to still pursue a degree despite having several kids already. And not just any degree if I may add. It is a nursing degree which requires students to render duty hours, attend review sessions, and take comprehensive exams. These are activities which will surely get in the way of one’s family life. But how did she nail it? Call it hitting two birds with one stone. She is a family woman and a student rolled into one! With her husband’s more-than-enough earnings, she could have been just a lady of leisure. Traveling, shopping, and eating at fancy restaurants. But this lady is different. She wanted a diploma, and achieved it in a very humble manner.

Nagkakilala kami sa school...(Naga College Foundation). I was in 3rd year highschool and he was in 1st year college. Magkasama kami sa isang theater group. He's my first and last boyfriend!

They have different reactions..may nagugulat..at meron din ayaw maniwala ha ha ha!

Did you have a job before ka nag nursing?

I worked at Klownz (Araneta) as cashier/encoder.

Why nursing?

Nakakatawa naman para akong bata...but it's really my dream since i was a child... to become a nurse someday...ha ha! And I am very thankful to my father-in-law and husband for their support.

How did you balance your time between your studies and family life? Mahirap ba?

Naku sobrang hirap i-balance...lalo na sa mga kids, minsan di ako nakakapunta sa mga important events sa school nila and sobrang sad ako dun...pero bumabawi naman kami during Sundays..family day talaga yun...yun din yung time ni Wally for us.

Do you plan to work as a nurse? I am sure Wally's earnings are enough.

Yes, i want to work as a nurse...kahit dito lang sa Philippines ok na sa akin he he he...ayaw din kasi ni Wally na umalis ako (if ever)...kasi maliliit pa ang bunzee and bunzay namin he he.

Ano work ni Wally bago mag showbiz?

Yes may show po sila sa 5...di naman po kasi sila exclusive sa 7...kaya ok lang naman.

Yes, they are close...kasi lagi silang "magkasama" hahaha...kidding aside...they're close naman talaga.

Have you met Tito, Vic, and Joey? Mabait ba talaga sila? 

Yes i have already met the TVJ...sobrang bait po nila...I like Bossing and Joey, sila talaga yung nakakausap ko...napakabait nila! 

What is the best thing about being Mrs. Wally Bayola?

The best thing about being Mrs. Bayola? Well, I get to meet people na kahit sa panaginip ko ay di ko inakalang makakasalamuha ko...at yung feeling na parang artista ka na rin kasi maraming nakakakilala sayo he he he!

Ano theme song nyo ni Wally?

Ha ha ha! Nakakatawa pero yung "Till Death Do Us Part" ng White Lions! Ha ha ha! 

Riza one time nakita kita sa Gani's. I was waiting for my food. Di ba may TV dun? Nakaupo ka mejo nakaharap sa TV. Noong nag-uumpisa na ang Eat Bulaga, you immediately stood up without touching your food and immediately left. Naaalala mo pa ba bakit ka umalis agad? I really wondered bakit ka umalis agad.

Hahahaha!..parang galit yata ako that time sa asawa ko...ha ha ha ha! Naalala mo pa yun sir?
