It cannot be denied that ABS-CBN hit a
goldmine when it acquired a franchise of Big Brother, a reality game
show that started in the Netherlands way back in 1999. It’s local adaptation is
called Pinoy Big Brother or simply PBB, and had its debut on Philippine
television in 2005.
From then on, it has been one of the
station’s widely anticipated programs, since it has already created a strong fan base
and has been the stepping stone to stardom of some of our current celebrities.
I am not really a big fan of this TV
franchise, except in two or three of its editions. One more confession is that
every time a new season begins, my curiosity is roused as to who will be
entering Kuya’s house.
So last April 27, I tuned in to channel two to scrutinize the new batch of housemates.

Homogenous
All of them are good-looking I must say,
unlike in the past editions wherein some of the housemates were quite
non-compliant in the looks department. My perception of this current PBB
edition is that the housemates will engage themselves in a battle royal in
terms of looks and other physical attributes.
I also noticed that most of them come from
well off families.
There is a degree of heterogeneity though – in terms of age, culture, family background, talents, and
academic background. I am sure that as time passes by, their unique personality
and character will rise up to the surface which will spice up their group.
But one thing undeniably is their common
denominator – their agreeable and pleasant looks.
On a personal note, I would have preferred
housemates who come from different walks of life. It would be interesting to
see how they would interact with each other, since it is through diversity (and
adversity if I may add) that real character shines.
Teleserye ng Totoong Buhay?
PBB’s tagline is “teleserye ng totoong
buhay”.
Based on this, the housemates are supposed to act natural, right? But the question that sprints to mind is that how can one act natural in a pseudo house where there are cameras and lapel microphones all over?

Is it really possible to act natural when
your life inside Kuya’s house, your every act and every word are seen and
heard respectively on national TV, live or taped?
I am afraid not.
Though there is no director inside Kuya’s
house, the housemates themselves can direct their own thoughts and actions. And
in such case, one should always put his or her best foot forward.
They are on national television to begin with in case you
have forgotten, and Kuya is always watching over them. This is not to mention
the viewers out there who might vote either for or against them.
Conclusion: Stepping Stone
Who does not want to be seen on TV?
It is more than obvious that people dream
of becoming a PBB housemate not really to enjoy the mechanics and real
objectives of the program, but to become popular, even just for a short while.
In a country that is crazy about artistas, young Filipinos who dream of
becoming one will explore all venues that can give them a potential crack at
stardom, and Pinoy Big Brother is one of those.
Being picked to become a PBB housemate already gives
one a crumb of celebrity status, and a flash in the pan popularity.
So this is how popular Pinoy Big Brother
is. Even those who are already artistas
in their own right still want to become a part of it.
Right Ms. Alex Gonzaga?
Good one. Now 18 housemates will be there in Pinoy Big Brother 2020. Bianca Gonzalez and Robi Domingo will also host the show PBB 9. Pinoy Big Brother connect housemates.
