On Freddie Aguilar and His New Found Love : Age Doesn't Matter

Freddie Aguilar is currently the subject of criticisms pertaining to his personal life. The man behind the internationally acclaimed song “Anak” is very much in love. So what is the fuss about it? The 60-year-old Ka Freddie is in a romantic venture with 16-year-old girl. Calculate their age difference, then you will know why Mr. Aguilar is in hot water nowadays.

People were quick to judge Aguilar. They threw labels at him such as cradle snatcher and pedophile. This name calling happened immediately after Aguilar announced publicly his relationship with the very young woman. The singer has even gone to the extent of revealing his intention to eventually marry her.

I myself was quite shocked with his disclosure, considering their 44-year age gap. This reminded me very much of other famous May-December affairs such as that of Vic Sotto and Pauleen Luna, and Hayden Kho and Vicky Belo.

I was initially inclined to take a negative stand about the issue, influenced by the ripple of off-putting reactions that it created. But at the end of the day, it dawned on me that nobody really is in a position to judge the couple. To start with, their relationship firmly rests on mutual understanding – neither coercion nor intimidation whatsoever took place.

The bone of contention is their eye-popping age gap. Aguilar is 44 years her senior, or the girl is 44 years his junior. So what? It is their own business, not ours. Their relationship may not be the norm, but there are always exceptions to the rule. Their relationship without a doubt is a bizarre one, but is there is any law against it? And with two people intensely in love with each other, everything seems to be just right.

Even what is perceived as wrong is spelled as r-i-g-h-t.

Happiness is subjective – it varies from one person to the next. So enough of those condemnations. Let us just leave them in peace. To love someone younger or older is not a crime.

Age doesn’t matter.
