Marian Rivera: Loyal and Grateful

Marian Rivera’s contract with GMA 7 is set to expire this month of August. As expected, this has set tongues wagging as to whether or not she will renew her contract with her mother network. Every time a showbiz personality’s contract with a TV station is about to expire or has expired already, people come up with their own guesswork pertaining to whether that personality will stay or will transfer to another station. But I guess this is only the case when bigger and brighter network stars are involved. Remember the time when Sharon Cuneta signed her earthshaking Kapatid contract to the tune of one billion pesos?

Singer-songwriter Ogie Alcasid is now a certified Kapatid. Will Regine Velasquez join her husband soon? TV5’s big boss, Manny Pangilinan, in case you don’t know, stood as one of the couple’s ninongs on their wedding. Judy Ann Santos is yet to renew her contract with the Kapamilya station, and this has set tongues wagging too as to whether she will stay with the network or not. What further fuels this speculation is Ms. Santos’ misunderstanding with her Kapamilya bosses regarding the premature and abrupt wrapping-up of her teleserye to give way to Daniel Padilla and Kathryn Bernardo’s own teleserye. Kathniel fans I heard can’t wait for their idols’ teleserye to have its primetime debut, which has pressured ABS-CBN to do something about it.

It is quite common for showbiz stars to do the rounds of TV networks. JC De Vera is now a Kapamilya, after being a Kapatid and Kapuso previously (a case of the grass is always greener at the other side of the fence?). Several years ago, Angel Locsin shook the television landscape when she jumped to ABS-CBN after starring in numerous primetime shows in GMA. Derek Ramsey did the same thing too when he moved to TV5 after several shows in ABS-CBN and a couple of movies for Star Cinema.

The good news is that Marian Rivera has just renewed her contract with the Kapuso network last August 10 at the Manila Golf and Country Club at Forbes Park, Makati. Good for three years, she signed the contract in the presence of GMA Chair and CEO Felipe Gozon and GMA President and COO Gilbert Duavit Jr. This has sealed the envelope so to speak, and has ended all sorts of speculations of her transfer to another network. I am not sure though, if there were really standing offers for her from rival networks. But with her stellar stature, I am mighty sure that the other network bigwigs toyed with the idea of signing her up.

But this probinsyana at heart has decided to stay put at GMA, the network that gave her numerous heavyweight primetime shows from Marimar which launched her to stardom, to Darna, to Amaya, and to Temptation of Wife. This girl really knows what loyalty and gratefulness mean. Besides, when you are already a queen in your court, will you still contemplate on transferring to other kingdoms that are way too crowded already? The grass might be greener at the other side of the fence, but contentment in and gratefulness for what you have at the moment will make you more blessed, since both will serve as a springboard for greater success and rewards in the future.

So is loyalty and gratefulness still in the vocabulary of our showbiz stars? Then ask Ms. Rivera. This is not to say though that she should remain a Kapuso for the rest of her life, since nothing is really  permanent in this world. But for now, at least she knows where she rightfully belongs to. Good luck to you Marian, and may your star shine even brighter.

"Masaya ako na pumirma ulit ako sa GMA 7,
dahil kung wala sila,walang
Marian Rivera."
