LESSONS I LEARNED FROM THE THE FIGHT OF THE CENTURY

1. Not all that glitters is gold

The Fight of the Century was several years in the making. And when Floyd and Manny finally sealed the deal, the boxing world rejoiced to the heavens! As boxing superstars in their own right, their recently concluded fight generated a tremendous amount of hype and publicity.

International celebrities, renowned athletes, and other famous individuals were all drawn to the fight like a moth to a flame.

But sadly, the lackluster performance of the two champs inside the ring did not measure up to all the hype that surrounded the so called “Fight of the Century”.

Hence, not all that glitters is gold.

2. The end justifies the means

Floyd is endlessly being criticized and ridiculed left and right for the kind of play he showed during the fight. He was all over the ring, stepping back, and did not really engage himself in a scuffle with Manny.

But it worked for him. He ran and danced his way to getting the title.

It did not matter to Floyd if he did not play fair and square. What mattered to him, was the preservation of his immaculate record of 47-0.

And so he remains undefeated. And this was all that mattered to him, even if he resorted to dubious means inside the ring.

Thus, the end justifies the means.

3. Money makes the world go round

Many things were at stake before, during, and after the mega fight – the individual record of Manny and Floyd, their legacy to the sport, respective fans, and of course, the prize money and other related earnings.

Manny and Floyd finally agreed to square off because the price was right (among other things).

Both will go down in history as athletes who pocketed millions of dollars in prize money.

Indeed, money is a great motivator - it makes the world go round.

4. Quit while on top

At this point in his career, Manny should be toying with the idea of hanging up his gloves for good while still at the top of his game. Yes you read it right - at the top of his game, even though he went home empty handed last Saturday.

He was defeated by Floyd alright, but the kind of match they had was not the spectacle every boxing fan hoped for. Hence, the quality of their fight was not sufficient to either make or break them.

Floyd won dubiously, and Manny lost dubiously likewise.

Though we would still love to see Manny go inside the ring and throw his signature punches, we cannot afford to see him marching to those "lesser" fights just to redeem himself after being beaten by Floyd.

Manny has nothing else to prove as he has already cemented his niche in boxing history even before the fight with Floyd. A proof for this is that his name is mentioned in the same breath as the names of other elite boxers in history are being mentioned.

And so an advice for Manny is to quit while still on top.
