On the Fallen 44: What Kris May Have Forgotten

Every time that our President becomes enmeshed in a controversy, expect his Queen-of-All-Media sister to be among the first few to throw the staunchest support.

Just recently, Kris Aquino unfollowed fellow celebrity Judy Ann Santos on Instagram, after the latter posted something not palatable to the former, with reference to PNOY’s absence during the arrival of the bodies of the so called Fallen 44 at Villamor Airbase last January 29.

Social media have conveniently paved the way for our thoughts to be heard, most especially for celebrities who have legions of followers, just like in the case of Kris and Judy Ann.

Whenever we feel strongly about a certain issue, and to an extent that we want our voice to be heard, then we troop to our social media accounts to say a thing or two.

Apart from Judy Ann, Kris also had a misunderstanding with Ogie Alcasid and Regine Velasquez on social media.

Amidst all the hullabaloo, allow me to remind Ms. Aquino of one fundamental thing – we are in a democratic country, which their own mother restored in 1986. Since then, it has allowed freedom of expression. People who criticized her brother simply exercised the right to express themselves, which is one of the hallmarks of a democratic nation.

Maybe what hurt Kris even more was that she didn’t expect criticisms to be coming from her own friends and allies. Though it was PNOY who was the subject and not her, blood is still thicker than water, if you know what I mean.

But for Kris’ own friends to pass judgment on his brother (privately or through social media), then there really must be something wrong, somewhere.

Anyway, for dear Kris, in case you have forgotten, we are in a democratic country. People will say what they want to say, both your friends and foes.
